Kathleen M. DumaisKathleen M. Dumais
Senior Counsel

Kathleen M. Dumais received her undergraduate degree cum laude from Mount Vernon College in Washington, D.C. and her J.D. from the University of Maryland, School of Law. She is a member of the bars of Maryland, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Her practice includes complex divorce and custody matters, and she often serves as a court-appointed best interest attorney for children in custody disputes.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Ms. Dumais has continued to be acknowledged for her outstanding work in the field. She received the prestigious 2010 Beverly A. Groner Family Law Award from the Maryland State Bar Association for her dedication to the practice of family law and for exemplifying the highest professional standards during a distinguished career. In 2010 she also received the Dorothy Beatty Memorial Award from the Women’s Law Center of Maryland and the Rita Davidson Memorial Award from the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland.

Consumer and business publications have also recognized Ms. Dumais’ remarkable record.  She has been recognized in the Maryland “Super Lawyers” publications in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 and as one of the Top 25 Women Lawyers by this same publication for the past four years.  She was included in the May/June 2010 and 2011 “Top Divorce Lawyer” rankings in Bethesda Magazine and has twice been named among the top 50 divorce lawyers in the Washington metropolitan area by Washingtonian.  She was selected one of Maryland’s “Top 100 Women” by the Daily Record in three different years (most recently in 2009), earning membership in the exclusive “Circle of Excellence.” She is a past winner of both the Woman of the Year Award given by the Montgomery County Business and Professional Women and the Professionalism Award from the Montgomery County Bar Association.

As a complement to her professional pursuits, Ms. Dumais has fashioned an equally formidable career in public service as a member of the Maryland General Assembly. She has been elected to the Maryland House of Delegates for District 15 in Montgomery County three times (2002, 2006 and 2010).  She currently sits on the Judiciary Committee and was appointed as Vice Chair of that Committee by House Speaker Michael Busch in 2010.

Ms. Dumais previously served on the Board of the Montgomery County Bar Foundation, and is a past Treasurer of both the Foundation and Montgomery County Bar Association. She was Co-Chair of the Family Law Section of the Montgomery County Bar Association (BAMC), President of the Women's Bar Association of Maryland-Montgomery County Chapter and a member of that group’s Executive Committee from 1995 to 2006. She formerly chaired the BAMC’s New Practitioner's Section. Ms. Dumais has also been recognized by the Catholic Charities Legal Services Network for her outstanding pro bono services.
